For this trait, your assignment is:

1. Read 2 books from the selection for Word Choice. For each book you read, make 2 comments about the choice of words for this book. This may be on specific words used, or on the general vocabulary of the book. What makes this book special, when it comes to the words the author has used? How could you use this information in your own writing?

2.Write two short poems, focusing on word choice.

  • Click on Sign In, then use this information. Email: hundal@vsb.bc.ca Password: mck You will see that your name on the site is mckechnie.

  • That will take you back to the Home page, where you will write your poems. You will write two; one using their vocabulary suggestions (Drag-N-Drop), and one Freestyle.

  • From the pictures that are scrolling by on top, pick one you like (use the See More feature to keep displaying more pictures). Click on it, and it will appear in the main space. Is this your Freestyle or your Drag-N-Drop? You can do them in whichever order, but need to do both.

  • FOR DRAG-N-DROP: Look at the picture carefully. What ideas are suggested to you by the picture? What is this picture "about", to you?
Now look over the words below. Which words pop out as being really interesting or appropriate? Start dragging them onto the picture...arrange and
rearrange....with capitals or without?.. when you choose a word, click on the drop-down menu after it, to see different forms of that word. If you don't
want a word, pull it back down into the word menu. Check your placement on the picture...covering up something important? Close? Spread apart? When you are finished, click on Save and make sure it says your PicLit has been saved.

  • FOR FREESTYLE:Choose a different picture and examine it. What ideas come from this one? Now choose your own words to describe it (although you can certainly be inspired by the words listed below the picture. Arrange your own words carefully...capitals or without?.

  • When you are finished, click on Save. Make sure it says that your PicLit has been saved. Now go to My PIcLits, and see your saved poems.

  • Now go to the wiki (6Plus1Traits), find your page and click on Edit. Scroll down so that the cursor is a few spaces below your last writing. Now click on Link (top of page). Click on External Link; now go back to the PicLit website and copy the URL address on top of your PicLit. Copy this into the Address space, and put your name and PicLit (eg Mary's PicLit) for Link Text. Then click Add Link at the bottom, and your poem will appear on the page!

3. Check out these "Million Dollar Words" for "said". These are all more imaginative and descrptive ways of using this word, although you still do want to use it sometimes! Use them to write a dialogue between 2 or 3 people. You may only use said 5 times, so choose them carefully! Think about the type of conversation you will write; will be it an argument? A person asking someone on a date? A robbery? First contact between an alien and a human? You may also use other words for 'said" that are not on this list.
