For this trait, your assignment is...

1. One way authors create a particular mood, emotion, or attitude in their writing is to use a variety of sentence lengths and structures. Not all sentences begin with the same words, or are the same length. Choose two books from the selection of Sentence Fluency. For each book read, make two comments on the effectiveness of the sentence structure. Does the author's use of varying sentence structures and lengths make a difference to the story and the effect it has on you the reader? In your comments, be sure to explain whether the sentences made sense and felt natural to the story as a whole.

2. Rick Riordan is a great author who has created some pretty awesome books. His writing makes the reader feel comfortable and his characters seem realstic, even if they are a horrific monster! Read The Lightning Thief pages 8 to 15, a scene in which Percy finds himself being chased by a monster. After you have read the scene, make a quick list of the things that make this scene a good read. What did Riordan use or do that makes this passage interesting? After you have a short list, read the student samples on the link below. Can you see similarities to Rick Riordan's writing? Are any of the items on your short list also evident in the student samples? Like the students on the link, you are also going to write a single scene that uses sentence variety and interesting word choice to convey a mood that is like Rick Riordan's writing style. If you are stuck for ideas of where to begin, try using the prompts of: Who? Did what? Where? When? And if you are really stuck... check out the button prompts at the link here: http://writingfix.com/Chapter_Book_Prompts/Lightning_Thief2.htm
